Reader Response: Prolonged Unconsciousness Following Severe COVID-19

Abdo et al. described a series of COVID-19 cases that showed a prolonged comatose state with full consciousness recovery after weeks of clinical evolution.1 Their patients showed a typical evolution from coma to unresponsive wakefulness state, and finally to a conscious state. MRI findings showed diffuse restricted diffusion in the corona radiata and subcortical white matter. Follow-up MRI studies showed newly developed restricted diffusion of the globus pallidus and substantia nigra, but no signs of hemorrhages, territorial infarcts, or microbleeds were seen.1
