Engineering of a 3D bioartificial niche for adult satellite cells expansion: role of oxygen content

The adult muscle stem cells, termed satellite cells (SC), posses a remarkable regenerative capability and represent the source of election for cell-based therapies in NMD. Despite their great potential, their therapeutic use in clinic is still limited by their poor number and by the absence of methods to efficiently amplify their pool in vitro. In fact, once isolated from the specialized microenvironment where they reside in vivo, called the niche, SCs spontaneously differentiate, loosing their myogenic capability and their self-renewal properties.
