Presynaptic neuromodulators like GABAB receptors impose high-pass filters on synaptic transmission, facilitating release when inputs arrive at high frequency. Burke et al. show that, unlike GABAB, dopamine suppresses glutamatergic release in prefrontal cortex independent of frequency, thus regulating synaptic gain.
