Leg muscles have been extensively studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Research in the arm muscles is rapidly advancing, however, the progression of MRI/MRS measures in the arms and legs of the same individual has not been documented. 88 corticosteroid-treated boys with DMD (24 non-ambulatory) and 28 controls aged 5-18 years participated in this cross-sectional multi-center study. Subjects participated in two MR sessions, each lasting 45 to 60 minutes.
