Skeletal muscle has the potential to efficiently regenerate after damage and this process is completely dependent on muscle satellite cells. In muscle-degenerative conditions this potential is often compromised so that the accumulating damage is not sufficiently repaired. Recently, we demonstrated that in muscle biopsies from Pompe disease (PD) patients from different ages and stage of disease normal levels of satellite cells were present. However, these muscle stem cells were not activated during the natural course of disease (Schaaf et al., 2015).
