Pompe disease, also known as glycogen storage disease type II, is an autosomal-recessive disorder caused by acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) deficiency due to mutations in the GAA gene. GAA deficiency causes glycogen accumulation in various tissues, most commonly within skeletal muscles, causing irreversible muscle damage.
