  • An Analysis of Guardian Cap Use and Changes in the Concussion Rate in National Football League Preseason Practices From 2018 to 2023
CONCLUSION: Required use of the Guardian Cap NXT was associated with a 54% to 62% reduction in the overall incidence of NFL practice concussions. However, when only concussions involving a helmet shell impact were considered, there was no longer a significant relationship between Guardian Cap NXT use and the incidence of concussions.
  • Selecting outcome measures to validate prognostic biomarkers of paediatric mild traumatic brain injury: challenges and priorities
Outcomes following paediatric mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are extremely heterogenous. While emerging biomarkers promise enhanced prognostic accuracy, a critical question remains unanswered-which outcome measures provide the most accurate assessment of injury impact? In this article, we highlight barriers to selecting appropriate outcome measures, including variability in how outcomes are defined and the wide range […]
  • Assessing Recovery from Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Mtbi) using Magnetoencephalography (MEG): An Application of the Synchronous Neural Interactions (SNI) Test
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) affects 22% of U.S. service members returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Its diagnosis is challenging due to the heterogeneous structural and functional alterations inflicted by diverse injury mechanisms. mTBI is diagnosed mainly based on history (trauma) and clinical evaluation, since conventional neuroimaging methods, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and […]
  • Assessment of white matter microstructure integrity in subacute postconcussive vestibular dysfunction using NODDI
Vestibular symptoms, such as dizziness and balance impairment, are frequently reported following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and are associated with a protracted recovery, yet the underlying neuroanatomical substrates remain unclear. The present study utilized advanced diffusion MRI (dMRI) techniques including both conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) […]
  • Who should mark the homework? Concussion, conflicts of interest, and the constitution of expertise
Concussion in sport is increasingly understood as a public health crisis. A key facet of this crisis concerns the claim that industry-funded research results in conflicts of interest that fundamentally compromise scholarship. This poses a particular problem for policymakers when adjudicating upon who counts as an expert and what to do with the evidence that […]
