Future assessment of sleep discrepancy may improve understanding of post-concussive sleep disturbance.
  • Mechanisms Underlying Hazardous Alcohol Use After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
PURPOSE: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have a bidirectional, synergistic, and complicated relationship. Although it is difficult to definitively say that mTBI causes AUD, certain biological mechanisms that occur after trauma are also associated with hazardous alcohol use. Hazardous drinking is defined as any quantity or pattern of alcohol consumption […]
  • Effects of Lifetime Exposure to Sports-Related Head Impacts on Brain Injury and Inflammatory Blood Biomarkers Among Former Middle-Aged Athletes
Repetitive head impacts from contact sports are associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative conditions. While studies have examined acute and chronic outcomes in young and deceased athletes, research on middle-aged former athletes remains limited. We employed multiplex biomarker approaches to examine whether brain injury and systemic inflammatory blood biomarkers are reflective of ≥10 years […]
  • Examining for race-associated differences on Sway Medical System balance and cognitive tests used for sport-related concussion
CONCLUSION: The race-associated differences between Black and White student-athletes on Sway Medical System balance and cognitive module scores are generally negligible. The reasons for modest race-associated differences on Memory scores are unknown and future research to examine the possible role or influence of social risk factors and psychosocial factors on module scores is recommended.
