  • Longitudinal Effects of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury on the Gut Microbiome and Acoustic Startle Response in Male and Female Rats
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) frequently occur and can lead to lasting negative cognitive, physical, and mental health outcomes. The biological response to even mild TBIs (mTBI) includes well-characterized inflammatory sequelae that start immediately post-injury, remain for weeks, and can develop into long-term systemic inflammation. Studies have shown that TBI influences multiple physiological systems, including the […]
  • The Qualitative Experiences of Youth With Disorders of Visual Efficiency
CONCLUSIONS: Similarities exist in occupational, social-emotional and adaptive needs of youth with disorders of visual efficiency resulting from either concussion or unknown etiology. These self-described experiences can assist caregivers, educators, and therapists in evaluation, intervention, and implementation of supports to improve engagement in valuable life roles.
  • Differential effects of sport type on brain versus orthopedic injury and sports benefits in the adolescent brain cognitive development study
CONCLUSION: Different sports have distinct risks for mTBI and OI in children. Behavioral benefits of sports were more pronounced for children with mTBI than for uninjured children but similar between mTBI and OI groups. While causal connections cannot be established with the current study design, these findings suggest the need for sport-specific and injury-specific strategies […]
  • Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: The majority of the acceptable evidence supported a relationship between SSRD and mTBI. However, there were few acceptable or high-quality studies available and further research on this topic is needed.
  • Risk of psychosis following mild traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: mTBI is associated with a moderate but statistically significant increase in the risk of psychosis. Given the prevalence of mTBI in the general population, these findings highlight the need for long-term psychiatric monitoring and preventive strategies, particularly in youth and high-risk individuals.
