  • Youth Ages 4 to 13 Trends of Sports Concussions With Loss of Consciousness From 2014-2023 National Electronic Injury Surveillance System
CONCLUSION: The results of this study show a decrease in the overall level of LOC incidence in US youth athletes ages 4 to 13 years from 2014 to 2023 across 8 sports. The data delineate from previous studies that show an exponential increase in LOC incidence; however, the underlying reasons are still unclear and warrant […]
  • Development of the Common Cognitive Complaints after Concussion (C4) questionnaire: a treatment-planning tool for military service members and veterans with mild traumatic brain injury
CONCLUSION: The C4 adequately captured activity-level functional impairments common to mTBI, and clinicians endorsed its utility as a useful tool to personalize treatment targets.
  • Decreased IL-33 in the brain following repetitive mild traumatic brain injury contributes to cognitive impairment by inhibiting microglial phagocytosis
CONCLUSIONS: Dysfunction of the IL-33/ST2 axis following rmTBI leads to cognitive dysfunction via impairing microglial phagocytosis capacity and promoting neuronal damage. IL-33 would be a promising therapeutic target for alleviating neurodegeneration following rmTBI.
  • Multidisciplinary rehabilitation and follow-up for children hospitalized with traumatic brain injury
PurposeMost children hospitalized with traumatic brain injury (TBI) acquire new impairments that impact function and health-related quality of life. However, there is a lack of standardized, multidisciplinary, longitudinal rehabilitative services for children with TBI.MethodsThis single center, retrospective study evaluated rehabilitative services during acute hospitalization and identified the frequency of unmet needs, defined as new or […]
  • Tackle characteristics associated with concussion in elite men's rugby union: unpicking the differences between tacklers and ball-carriers
CONCLUSIONS: Lower tackles reduce the chances of concussion to ball-carriers. The influence of tackle height on concussion to tacklers is more nuanced, but the chances are relatively low when contact is made with the ball-carrier's torso. These findings support ongoing implementation of strategies to reduce concussion risk by lowering tackle height to target the torso.
