  • Transcranial Photobiomodulation and Firefighter Health and Wellness: A Single-Arm, Open-Label Pilot Study
Background: First responders are often exposed to many physically and mentally stressful events throughout their careers, and common complaints include poor sleep quality, chronic pain, post-traumatic stress symptoms, mood dysregulation, and cognitive impairments. Objective: We performed an open protocol, active treatment-only study with a small sample of male firefighters (n = 16) to examine the […]

  • Forced-rate aerobic cycling improves locomotor function and gait biomechanics in individuals with chronic stroke: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Improvements in gait velocity following forced-rate cycling were accompanied by normalization of gait biomechanics rather than exaggerated compensatory strategies, supporting the use of aerobic cycling as a viable and safe intervention to improve locomotor control post-stroke.
  • Cognitive-Communication Rehabilitation after Brain Injuries
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide communicative and cognitive rehabilitation for people with brain injuries, and this article describes current assessment and treatment after a brain injury. Cognitive problems can affect attention, concentration, and memory, as well as metacognitive skills to self-monitor, control, and adjust one's thinking. Speech-language pathology (SLP) rehabilitation is initiated in acute inpatient settings […]
  • Virtual reality in training of sustained attention, processing speed, and working memory after traumatic brain injury: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: VR-training did not improve sustained attention. However, a combination of prolonged reaction times and a decrease in errors in the VR-group may indicate improved attentional control. In addition, the findings suggest that VR-training might positively affect executive functioning. VR-training may be used for cognitive training after TBI.
