  • Incretin Mimetics as Potential Therapeutics for Concussion and Traumatic Brain Injury: A Narrative Review
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a significant health concern, with an estimated 70 million annual cases worldwide. Mild brain trauma (concussions) is the most common TBI (81%), followed by moderate (11%) and severe (8%). Cytokine release and neuroinflammation after TBI may cause blood-brain barrier and tissue damage, triggering unfavorable outcomes, including disabilities and mortality. Current […]
  • N-Stearidonoylethanolamine Restores CA1 Synaptic Integrity and Reduces Astrocytic Reactivity After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) disrupts hippocampal network function through coordinated alterations in glial reactivity, synaptic integrity, and adult neurogenesis. Effective therapeutic approaches targeting these interconnected processes remain limited. Lipid-derived molecules capable of modulating these mTBI-induced disturbances are emerging as promising neuroprotective candidates. Here, we investigated the effects of N-stearidonylethanolamine (SDEA), an ω-3 ethanolamide, in […]
  • Effects of persistent post-concussion symptoms on neurocognitive, motor, and neurophysiological outcomes
CONCLUSION: The PPCS group demonstrated greater symptom reporting and severity, worse neurocognitive performance, worse balance and gait performance, and altered neurophysiology. Further, females with PPCS demonstrated worse balance and gait performance compared to all other groups.
  • Injury-environment interaction: microglial priming by mTBI creates vulnerability to subsequent stress via the HMGB1-RAGE axis
CONCLUSION: Our study untangles a "priming-triggering" mechanism of injury-environment interaction, identifying the HMGB1-RAGE axis as its key molecular mediator. This finding not only enhances our understanding of how latent vulnerability transitions into overt neuropsychiatric disease, but also provides a promising target for preventive intervention.
  • Relationship between illness perceptions, coping style and post-concussion symptoms after systemic traumatic injury: A comparison of those with and without mild traumatic brain injury
Research has reported variable findings when investigating the relationship between outcome and coping style and illness perceptions after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The present study investigated 138 individuals who had been admitted to hospital after suffering a traumatic systemic injury, with 91 of these individuals also fulfilling criteria for mTBI and 47 comprising a […]
