  • Inadvertent Intracranial Nasogastric Tube Placement Causing Traumatic Brain Injury in a Neonatal Cat
A 20-day-old, 0.26 kg intact female domestic shorthair kitten was presented for evaluation of labored breathing and decreased appetite. Physical examination and thoracic radiographs were consistent with bronchointerstitial pneumonia, and the cat was hospitalized and treated with antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and nutritional support through a nasogastric tube. Mild resistance was encountered during nasogastric tube placement […]
  • Assessing everyday action in young adult athletes using the Virtual Kitchen Challenge: Relations with conventional cognitive tests
CONCLUSIONS: The VKC is a promising portable performance-based measure of subtle functional difficulties for young, high-functioning participants. The VKC automated scoring makes it highly efficient for large studies and clinical settings.
  • Conservative Concussion Management in Youth Athletes Can Avoid Increased Injury Rates After Return to Sport: Initial Evidence
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides preliminary evidence suggesting that when current guidelines for return to play are followed, concussed pediatric athletes can resume activity without facing an elevated risk of injury. Time to achieve clearance in pediatric and adolescent athletes can be expected to be longer than the 7 to 14 days typical for older athletes.
  • Recurrent spaced concussions in adolescent rats disrupt cortical dopaminergic markers and induce behavioral hyperactivity and impaired object location memory
Repeated concussions during critical stages of brain development can lead to lasting neural and behavioral changes. This study characterized the consequences of recurrent, spaced concussions using a clinically relevant adolescent Wistar rat model. Male rats were subjected to ten spaced concussions via a weight-drop model during adolescence (P42-P73) and subsequently underwent neurobehavioral, neurochemical, and histological […]
  • The Dynamic Interaction Between Psychological Health and Sleep Symptoms Following Adolescent Concussion
CONCLUSIONS: Poor sleep quality was highly prevalent and associated with worse psychological health symptoms. Incorporating routine assessments of sleep and psychological health, during and after recovery, may help clinicians provide interventions and reduce risk of psychological symptoms after concussion.
