  • Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell administration for neurological sequelae after traumatic brain injury: a matched control study
Neurological sequelae after traumatic brain injury impair motor and behavioural functions, imposing a heavy burden on patients and society. Traditional treatments show limited efficacy, highlighting the need for advanced therapies. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of intrathecal administration of bone marrow mononuclear cells for treating these sequelae. A matched control clinical trial was […]
  • Concussion Classification in a Multicenter Patient Cohort: The Updated ACRM Diagnostic Criteria and Concordance With Physician Impression of Injury
CONCLUSION: Use of the ACRM criteria clinically to determine if an injury qualifies as mTBI may be less susceptible to bias from ongoing symptom reporting than the physician impression of the injury.
  • Performance of GFAP and UCH-L1 compared to S100B in detecting intracranial injury: influence of age, hemolysis, neurodegenerative diseases, and extracranial fractures in a prospective cohort of over 1,000 patients
CONCLUSIONS: S100B and the GFAP/UCH-L1 combination demonstrated very high sensitivities, close to 100 %, with specificities of approximately 30 % for the diagnosis of intracranial lesions. Age-adjusted thresholds improve specificity in older patients, supporting their clinical implementation. This study also provides the first evidence that hemolysis significantly elevates UCH-L1 concentrations from 400 mg/L of hemoglobin.
  • Retired contact sports athletes with cognitive concerns: promoting lifelong brain health
There is widespread concern among former athletes about the link between head injury and dementia. Neurologists are increasingly assessing ex-contact sports athletes with cognitive and behavioural issues following repetitive head impacts and traumatic brain injury. Their assessment and management can be challenging due to the broad differential diagnosis, including psychiatric issues, trauma-related impairment and, in […]
  • Visible signs of possible concussion at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Independent review and inter-rater reliability
CONCLUSIONS: Visible signs of concussion categorized as "red flags" were infrequent, resulting in uncertain reliability. The frequency and reliability of visible signs categorized as "yellow flags" and "other signs" varied, with the visible signs "clutching of the head" and "slow to get up" occurring so frequently that their utility for identifying possible concussion in football […]
