  • Performance of GFAP and UCH-L1 compared to S100B in detecting intracranial injury: influence of age, hemolysis, neurodegenerative diseases, and extracranial fractures in a prospective cohort of over 1,000 patients
CONCLUSIONS: S100B and the GFAP/UCH-L1 combination demonstrated very high sensitivities, close to 100 %, with specificities of approximately 30 % for the diagnosis of intracranial lesions. Age-adjusted thresholds improve specificity in older patients, supporting their clinical implementation. This study also provides the first evidence that hemolysis significantly elevates UCH-L1 concentrations from 400 mg/L of hemoglobin.
  • Retired contact sports athletes with cognitive concerns: promoting lifelong brain health
There is widespread concern among former athletes about the link between head injury and dementia. Neurologists are increasingly assessing ex-contact sports athletes with cognitive and behavioural issues following repetitive head impacts and traumatic brain injury. Their assessment and management can be challenging due to the broad differential diagnosis, including psychiatric issues, trauma-related impairment and, in […]
  • Visible signs of possible concussion at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Independent review and inter-rater reliability
CONCLUSIONS: Visible signs of concussion categorized as "red flags" were infrequent, resulting in uncertain reliability. The frequency and reliability of visible signs categorized as "yellow flags" and "other signs" varied, with the visible signs "clutching of the head" and "slow to get up" occurring so frequently that their utility for identifying possible concussion in football […]
  • Non-immersive virtual reality for cognitive rehabilitation of individuals with severe acquired brain injury (VR-sABI): study protocol for a multicentric randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND: After a severe acquired brain injury (sABI), individuals might experience mild-to-severe cognitive impairments. In these patients, cognitive rehabilitation is provided as early as possible, to take advantage of and guide brain plasticity. According to a restorative approach, traditional cognitive training (TCT) usually involves repeated paper-and-pencil exercises of increasing difficulty and targeting specific cognitive domains. […]
  • What traditional neuropsychological assessment got wrong about mild traumatic brain injury. III: the added value of advanced neuroimaging
CONCLUSIONS: Characterizations from traditional neuropsychological measures as independent tests indicating no lasting sequelae from mTBI, especially after three-months post-injury from mTBI need to be viewed within the context of what advanced neuroimaging can demonstrate. Future directions involving the integration of advanced neuroimaging developments applicable to the mTBI patient are reviewed, especially when integrated with neuropsychological […]
