Research

  • Basic Science and Pathogenesis
CONCLUSION: Young amateur contact sports players are at risk for structural and microstructural brain injuries, including enlarged ventricles, cavum septum pellucidum, microvascular injury, blood-brain barrier breach, interface astrocytosis, and glymphatic remodeling. Future studies are needed to clarify the association between these early structural injuries after RHI and risk for CTE.
  • Basic Science and Pathogenesis
CONCLUSION: These data identify sex differences in the extent of axonal pathologies in brain white matter acutely after TBI, which appears related to sex differences in axon diameter. Notably, these findings further shed light on insights that damaged and degenerating axons following TBI may provide a rich source of APP/Aβ as pathologic substrate contributing to […]
  • Interaction of Obese Body Mass Index and Comorbidities on Inflammatory Profiles and Clinical Outcomes After Traumatic Brain Injury: A TRACK-TBI Study
CONCLUSIONS: Obesity and comorbidity profiles are associated with an inflammatory response with the potential to impact recovery; consideration of systemic health at the time of injury could improve recovery.
  • Alzheimer's Imaging Consortium
CONCLUSION: In a community-based cohort of older adults, TBI was associated with reductions in MRI hippocampal, frontal gray matter, and total cerebral gray matter volumes in females, but not males. Sex may portend different risk for later life atrophy after TBI, particularly in brain regions commonly affected by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Future work […]
  • Developing Topics
BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) are significant causes of disability in the USA, with millions affected and high treatment costs. Research has identified disrupted connections between auditory and visual sensory pathways in both conditions, leading to impairments in balance, sleep, posture, motor function, sensory integration (including visual-vestibular), and emotional regulation. These […]
