  • Basic Science and Pathogenesis
CONCLUSION: Young amateur contact sports players are at risk for structural and microstructural brain injuries, including enlarged ventricles, cavum septum pellucidum, microvascular injury, blood-brain barrier breach, interface astrocytosis, and glymphatic remodeling. Future studies are needed to clarify the association between these early structural injuries after RHI and risk for CTE.
  • Interaction of Obese Body Mass Index and Comorbidities on Inflammatory Profiles and Clinical Outcomes After Traumatic Brain Injury: A TRACK-TBI Study
CONCLUSIONS: Obesity and comorbidity profiles are associated with an inflammatory response with the potential to impact recovery; consideration of systemic health at the time of injury could improve recovery.
  • Basic Science and Pathogenesis
CONCLUSION: These data identify sex differences in the extent of axonal pathologies in brain white matter acutely after TBI, which appears related to sex differences in axon diameter. Notably, these findings further shed light on insights that damaged and degenerating axons following TBI may provide a rich source of APP/Aβ as pathologic substrate contributing to […]
  • Extracranial Hemodynamic Responses to a Noxious Cold Pressor Task Differ Between Persistent Post-Traumatic Headache and Healthy Controls
Background/Objectives: Headache after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most common post-concussive symptoms and is associated with altered pain processing and elevated disability levels. Understanding physiologic correlates of nociception in individuals with persistent post-traumatic headache (pPTH) may help identify novel treatment targets for pain-related disability. The objective of this case-control study was […]
  • The relationship between dispositional mindfulness and psychological, cognitive, and functional outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury
Background: Most individuals who sustain a mild uncomplicated Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) recover within 1-3 months. However, a significant proportion consistently report ongoing cognitive, psychological, and somatic sequelae, which can be functionally disabling and hinder active participation in society following injury. The present study examined dispositional mindfulness as a targetable protective factor as it pertains […]
