The primary aim of this survey was to gather comprehensive data regarding dental trauma, head and neck injuries, and the utilization of mouthguards among wrestlers participating in the 77th National Sports Festival. The investigation focused on understanding the prevalence of injuries sustained during wrestling activities, with a specific emphasis on the types and frequencies of these injuries. By dissecting the patterns of dental trauma and head and neck injuries, researchers aimed to identify common risk factors associated with wrestling as a contact sport.
Another critical objective of the survey was to evaluate the awareness and utilization of mouthguards, which serve as a protective measure against injuries in wrestlers. The survey sought to determine how many athletes regularly used mouthguards, the type of mouthguards preferred, and the reasons for not using them among those who did not. This information is invaluable as it can influence recommendations for best practices in injury prevention and highlight areas where further education is needed regarding mouthguard efficacy in minimizing the risk of dental and craniofacial injuries.
Additionally, the survey intended to scrutinize the correlation between the demographic variables of participants—such as age, weight category, experience level, and prior history of injuries—and their relationship with injury incidence rates. By achieving these objectives, the study aimed to provide a thorough understanding of the current state of injury prevalence in wrestling and to advocate for improved safety measures, including enhanced training on the importance of protective gear like mouthguards.
Participant Demographics

Each weight category, including light, middle, and heavyweight classes, was adequately represented, which is essential for assessing variations in injury rates that may be influenced by weight-related factors. For instance, heavier weight classes may exhibit different patterns of injury compared to lighter classes, potentially due to differences in force and impact during matches.
The experience level of participants ranged from novices, who had less than one year of practice, to seasoned wrestlers with over 10 years of competitive experience. This wide spectrum of experience provided valuable insights into how familiarity with the sport correlated with injury incidence. It was hypothesized that more experienced wrestlers might have better technique and awareness, potentially leading to lower rates of injury. For those who chose not to wear a mouthguard, the reasons varied. Approximately 30% cited discomfort as a primary concern, expressing that the mouthguards interfered with their ability to speak and breathe during intense physical activity. Additionally, some wrestlers expressed skepticism regarding the efficacy of mouthguards in preventing injuries, indicating a need for further education on the protective benefits and the potential long-term consequences of dental trauma associated with not using these devices. This is particularly concerning given that wrestlers are at a higher risk for oral injuries, and studies show that regular mouthguard users experience significantly lower rates of dental trauma (Rugani et al., 2021).
The survey also collected data on the perceived importance of mouthguard usage. Participants indicated that while they recognized the heightened risk of injury in wrestling, peer behavior and influence played a critical role in their decisions about mouthguard wear. Many athletes reported that their team culture and the attitudes of their coaches significantly impacted their mouthguard usage. Wrestling coaches are often pivotal in shaping their athletes’ safety practices; therefore, their endorsement of mouthguard use could enhance compliance among team members.
Interestingly, demographic factors exhibited a correlation with mouthguard usage patterns. Younger athletes were significantly more likely to report using mouthguards compared to their older counterparts, potentially reflecting a generational shift towards increased awareness of injury prevention. Furthermore, wrestlers with a history of dental injuries showed higher usage rates, suggesting that personal experience with injury can motivate protective behavior.
